Watch cornerback leverage on the outside receivers, if they are pressed and inside leverage that confirms man coverage responsibilities are locked in underneath. Postsnap key the quarterback's eyes and front shoulder turn to trigger the robber defender's jump on shallow crossers, digs, or drag routes before the throw is released. This play is vulnerable to vertical stress concepts like four verticals or double moves on isolated outside receivers since the deep safety has no help over the top in true single high look. Watch for user pressure off the edge since the four man rush paired with underneath man coverage can create a nano blitz effect if the offensive line fails to identify the extra rusher.
Usage Tips
Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to attack the middle of the field with drags, digs, or shallow crosses against man coverage. User the robber defender and stay patient, reading the quarterback's shoulders instead of jumping too early or you will get burned by a double move. Confirm single high safety presnap since if the offense shows two high shells you may want to check into Cover 6 or Cover 4 Quarters instead for better zone integrity. Pair this play in sequence with Cover 1 Robber Tom and Cover 1 Robber from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the robber defender's alignment or blitz tell from formation alone. Avoid calling this against heavy vertical stacks or four verticals since the single high safety can get stressed deep with no deep help over the top.
