Cover 3 Sky is a zone coverage shell out of the Nickel Load set that drops three deep defenders and four underneath in a traditional Cover 3 look with the strong safety rotating down as the "sky" run support defender. The two outside cornerbacks bail into deep thirds while the deep middle safety splits the field, and both slot defenders sink into curl-to-flat zones underneath, squeezing the seams and flats. This is a zone beater designed to defend the run first while still providing three-deep protection against vertical shots, and it holds up well against play-action rollouts and quick-hitting route combos that attack the flats.
Watch for the strong safety cheating down pre-snap since that tips the Sky rotation and signals extra run support to that side. Post-snap, key the underneath zone defenders sinking to the curl-flat area, this is where you jump hitches, quick outs, and shallow crosses for a user pick. This shell is vulnerable to deep out routes and corner routes thrown to the boundary since the deep third cornerback has to respect the flat threat first. Watch the seams: if the offense runs dual seam routes from the slot, the underneath defenders can get caught in no man's land between the flat and the seam. This coverage struggles against four verticals and Y-cross combos that stretch the deep middle safety, so bail to Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 6 if you see stacked or bunch formations pre-snap.
Call this on early downs when you expect run or short play-action since the Sky rotation adds an extra body in the box against the run.
Bait quarterbacks into throwing hitches and flat routes by showing man press pre-snap, then let the curl-flat defenders sit and jump the route once the ball is thrown.
User the deep middle safety or one of the underneath zone defenders depending on whether you expect a vertical shot or a quick game beater over the middle.
Pair this with Cover 3 Buzz Mable and Cover 3 Match from the same set to disguise your deep third rotation and keep opposing offenses guessing on which zone defender is sinking versus buzzing.
Avoid calling this on third and long against trips or bunch formations since the underneath zones can get stressed by four vertical releases stacked to one side.
