Breakdown

Overload 3 Seam is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of Nickel Load that overloads one side of the formation with three rushers stacked to that edge while dropping the rest into a three deep, four under zone shell. The diagram shows both outside linebackers running seam routes up the numbers off play-action style drops, the slot corner running a shallow drag across the field, and the deep safety wheeling into a deep third on the overload side, giving you natural crossers underneath the seams. This is a blitz package designed to bring pressure from a stacked edge while still holding three deep zones, so the primary read progression is quick game read on the initial rush, then eyes to the near seam, working to the drag crosser underneath if the seam is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify which side of the formation is stronger and align your overload to attack the weaker protection edge. Watch the running back's alignment before the snap, if he is set to chip or pick up the overload, expect a quicker throw or checkdown from the quarterback. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes to the near seam route since that is the first window this coverage tries to close down. This shell is vulnerable to quick outs and flat routes away from the overload since the underneath zone rotates late, so watch for user receivers working away from the pressure. Against play-action, trust your zone drops and do not bite on the run fake, since the overload rush is designed to disrupt the pocket before any deep shot develops.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short when you expect a run or quick game concept, since the overload rush can blow up plays before they develop.

Check the box count pre-snap and align the overload side away from the offense's strongest blocker or running back to maximize free rushers.

If the offense shows a lot of receivers to the overload side, consider audibling the overload to the opposite edge to keep the pressure unblocked.

Pair this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match on neighboring calls so the offense cannot key your zone shell purely off pre-snap look.

Against teams that love quick RPO game or hot route sight adjusts, dial this up on early downs to punish slow-developing reads before the quarterback can reset.
