Defensive Reads
Identify single high safety pre-snap since this play is designed to exploit Cover 1 man coverage with a double move on Wr1. Watch the corner across from Wr1 for outside leverage, if he is playing off you have room to work the double move but if he is pressed at the line the timing changes. Key the underneath linebackers and nickel defender after the snap, since a lurking defender sitting on the crossing routes can jump the secondary read and bait a turnover. Cover 3 Sky and Cover 4 Quarters from the same playbook will squeeze the vertical stem on Wr1 and force the quarterback into the underneath progression immediately. Blitz packages with man coverage behind them are the biggest risk since the double move needs time to develop, so a fast interior pressure can collapse the play before the top read opens.

Pair this play with Cover 1 Robber or Cover 1 Robber Pirate from the same set so opponents cannot sit on the double move tendency once they see Load formation on tape. Best called on second and medium or third and long when the defense is more likely to play aggressive man coverage and bring extra rushers.
