3-3 Over Jack

SpecialistsRLERRERDTNTSUBLBSLCB

Overview

3-3 Over Jack is a defensive set inside the Nickel formation, built on Nickel 4-2-5 personnel but aligned with three down linemen shaded to an Over front with a Jack linebacker walked up over the tackle or on the edge. The tags tell the story: RLE, RRE, RDT, NT, SUBLB, and SLCB. You get a true nose tackle anchoring the A gap, two edge players, and a sub linebacker who can either rush from a standing look or bail into a hook zone. That hybrid front is the whole point of this set. The offense cannot tell from the pre-snap picture whether you are rushing three, four, or five, and the slot corner tag (SLCB) means your best cover nickel is on the field instead of a plodding backer chasing a slot receiver.

Strengths

  • Simulated pressure package is elite here: Cross Sim 2, Show SS Sim 2, Nickel Sim 2, Sim Pressure 3, and Field Sim 2 all show six and rush four, so you get pressure without giving up the underneath zones behind it
  • Coverage variety is unmatched in the formation with quarters, Tampa 2, Cover 6, Cover 6 Willie, Cover 4 Palms, Cover 2 Invert, Cover 3 Match, Cover 3 Buzz Match, and Cover 2 Match all available from the same shell, so you can run the entire coverage tree without changing your alignment tell
  • Bracket 9 Switch, Double Bracket, Double Bracket Switch, 1 Double WR1, and 1 Double TE let you erase an opponent's money receiver or seam-running tight end without burning a full coverage call on him
  • The SLCB tag means your slot corner, not a linebacker, matches the number two receiver, which kills slot fade, whip, and option route money plays that beat traditional Nickel sets
  • Roll Cover 2 Invert, Roll Cover 3 Cloud, Roll 23 Cloud, and Cover 3 Sky let you disguise post snap rotation, so a quarterback reading a two high shell pre-snap throws into a single high look after the snap

Weaknesses

  • Three down linemen with a stand-up Jack means a light box against heavy personnel. Power run schemes with a fullback or extra tight end can wash the NT and RDT out and hit the B gap before your SUBLB fills
  • Zero blitzes in this set (FS Will Blitz 0, Edge Blitz 0) leave no help over the top. A good user with a slot fade or a corner route off play action punishes you immediately if the rush does not get home
  • The sim pressure plays rush four from a five or six man show, so an opponent who recognizes the look and slides protection toward the sim side gets a clean pocket with no free rusher
  • Heavy man calls like Cover 2 Man and Cover 1 Robber get shredded by drag and mesh concepts because your SUBLB and linebackers have to carry crossers with limited traffic help
  • Play action rollouts and QB scrambles stress this set. With only three down linemen and edge players who crash on the blitz calls, contain leaks and a mobile quarterback turns a coverage sack into a first down

Usage Tips

Live in the sim pressure family on obvious passing downs. Alternate Cross Sim 2, Nickel Sim 2, and Show SS Sim 2 so the opponent never knows which side the actual rusher is coming from while you user the middle hook

Against a single receiver an opponent force feeds, call Bracket 9 Switch or 1 Double WR1 and let the bracket do the work, then user the opposite hash to take away the backside dig or post

On third and long, pair Tampa 2 or Cover 2 Invert with a pre-snap pinch of the defensive line to funnel scrambles inside. The Tampa hole player kills the deep middle seam that normally beats Cover 2

Use Cover 4 Palms and Cover 6 against trips or bunch. Palms lets your corner trap the out breaking route while quarters holds the vertical, which is the cleanest answer to smash and flood concepts from this set

Mix in Cover 1 Robber or Cover 1 Hole on early downs against RPO heavy offenses. The robber sits in the throwing window for slants and glance routes and turns a quick game read into a pick

When you get a heavy personnel or condensed formation look, kick out of 3-3 Over Jack entirely or check into Over Storm Brave to get a fifth body attacking the line of scrimmage instead of playing light against the run
