Roll 23 Cloud is a zone coverage play run out of the 3-3 Over Jack Nickel front that rolls the coverage to a cloud shell with the corner sitting outside on flat and quick routes while the safety works over the top. This is a run support and cloud coverage concept designed to squeeze the boundary, deny hitches and outs, and force the quarterback to work the middle of the field, so it functions as a zone beater killer against boundary heavy passing attacks rather than a play that beats coverage itself. The primary read progression for the defense is flat to curl to deep third, keying the flat defender first to see if the running back or slot receiver leaks out before working up to the levels routes over the top.
Read the running back and tight end release first, since cloud coverage is designed to jump underneath flat and quick out routes before the quarterback commits. Check the offensive formation strength pre-snap and confirm your cloud rotation is set to the passing strength side, since misaligned rotation leaves the boundary flat wide open. Watch for trips or bunch formations that stack multiple receivers to the cloud side, since this can overload the flat defender and create natural pick or rub situations. Post-snap, key the slot corner or nickel defender's depth in the flat, since a poor jump on the quick game concept allows easy completions with room to run after the catch. This shell struggles against play-action rollouts and rollout passes to the cloud side since the roll can get attacked by the same flat area it is trying to defend, so watch run action and rollout keys before committing your flat defender fully.
Call Roll 23 Cloud on early downs when you expect boundary run action or quick game passing concepts like flat and slant combos that attack the edge.
Use your pre-snap alignment to identify if the offense is aligning with a heavy run look to the cloud side, since this play is built to funnel ball carriers back inside to pursuit.
User the cloud defender (the corner or nickel rolled into the flat) so you can jump underneath routes and squeeze the sideline throw before the quarterback releases it.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Cloud and Roll Cover 3 Cloud from the same set to disguise your shell, since all three show similar pre-snap rotation but differ in who fills the flat versus the deep third.
Avoid calling this against spread formations with four verticals concepts, since the roll can leave a seam or post window open if your deep safety does not get proper depth quickly.
