Nickel Sim 2 is a five man simulated pressure package out of the 3-3 Over Jack front, meaning it shows a blitz look pre-snap but drops extra defenders into underneath and deep zone coverage instead of sending numbers. The front generates a disguised four man rush while the remaining defenders spin into a zone shell, typically a variation of Cover 3 or Cover 4 concepts behind it, designed to bait quick pre-snap decisions into hot routes or check downs. The primary read progression for the defense is to identify which underneath defender is dropping versus rushing, then trigger to the flat or curl zone the quarterback is targeting once he commits to a hot read.
Watch for the quarterback staring down the middle of the field immediately after the snap, which usually means he read the disguise as pressure and is looking for a hot route into the vacated area. Key on running backs and tight ends releasing into the flat or shallow crossers, since sim pressure is designed to bait these throws and the underneath defenders are sitting on exactly those routes. Identify pre-snap whether the offense has an empty or spread formation, since Nickel Sim 2 is more vulnerable to quick slants and hitches against three and four receiver sets that flood one side faster than the zone can rotate. Beware of play action or RPO calls that attack downfield, since sim pressure sacrifices some deep coverage integrity and a well timed shot play can expose the safety rotation if the disguise gets picked up late. This call struggles against quarterbacks who recognize the four man rush quickly and reset their eyes to attack the seams or deep outside, so avoid overusing it against mobile scramblers who can extend plays past the initial coverage window.
Show pressure at the line with defender shifts before the snap to sell the blitz look and force the offense into a hot route or checkdown decision. Use this call on early downs against offenses that love RPOs or quick game concepts, since the disguised drop defenders can jump passing lanes underneath. Pair Nickel Sim 2 with Edge Blitz 3 or FS Will Blitz 0 in your play calling sequence so the offense cannot distinguish your true blitz calls from your sim pressure looks based on pre-snap alignment alone. User the closest underneath defender to the boundary and manually key the running back or slot receiver, since sim pressure concepts rely heavily on the user making a play on a quick throw. Save this play for third and short or second and medium situations where quarterbacks are conditioned to expect an all out blitz and will throw into the disguised zone before processing the coverage rotation.
