Cover 2 Match is a zone based coverage shell out of the 3-3 Over Jack Nickel front that plays match principles underneath while keeping two deep safeties on top. The corners and hook defenders read route combinations and lock onto receivers who threaten their zone, essentially playing man coverage once routes declare, while the two deep safeties split the field to eliminate the deep middle and sideline shots. This is a zone beater killer against four verticals and a strong answer to man beater route combos, and the primary read progression starts with the deep safeties: if they stay honest and split evenly, work the underneath match zones and look for the flat to curl combination before checking the deep middle seam.
Watch the two deep safeties pre snap, if they are aligned at equal depth near the numbers this confirms the two deep shell and tells you the deep middle and sideline are protected. Post snap, key the underneath defenders as they read the number two receiver, since match coverage will have them sink into their zone until a receiver threatens it, then convert to man. This shell is vulnerable to quick game and RPO concepts that attack the flat before the match defenders can convert, so watch for slot fades or quick outs on early downs. Beware of user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate throwing lanes, since a smart user will bait a throw into the seam or curl zone even though the shell looks open. Play action rollouts and boot concepts can stress the match rules since linebackers reading run keys may bite, leaving crossers open behind them, so respect run action tendencies before committing.
Use this call on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to attack vertically since the two deep safeties eliminate big plays over the top.
Pre snap, identify if the offense is showing a stack or bunch look, since match principles can get confused against traffic at the line and create a natural pick opportunity for the offense.
Bait quarterbacks into throwing hitches or shallow crossers by showing this look, then user the underneath match defender to jump the route once the receiver declares.
Pair Cover 2 Match with Cover 2 Invert or Tampa 2 in the same play call sequence so the offense cannot key the deep safety rotation based on pre snap alignment alone.
Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel on early downs since the underneath defenders are reading pass keys and can be slow to fill run fits.
