Cover 3 Cloud is a zone defense out of the 3-3 Over Jack Nickel front that rolls the strong side corner down into a cloud technique, meaning he sinks underneath the number one receiver instead of playing deep third. The safety on that side rotates over the top to help bracket the outside receiver while the free safety holds the deep middle third and the weak corner plays his deep third alone. This is a zone beater killer against quick out and flat routes to the boundary since the underneath cloud defender jumps hitches and shallow crossers, and the primary read progression for the defense is to first identify the number one receiver on the cloud side, then scan the flat to hook zone for backs leaking out, before finally working to the deep middle third for any vertical shot.
Pre snap check safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are showing two high with one shaded toward the boundary you likely have a cloud rotation coming and can anticipate the flat squeeze. Watch cornerback press alignment on the cloud side, a corner playing off coverage at five to seven yards is telegraphing the cloud technique and will not challenge a hard release at the line. Post snap key the flat defender first since he is your primary underneath threat against quick game, if he sits too flat footed against play action he opens up the deep out or corner route behind him. This coverage is vulnerable to four verticals and deep crossing routes that attack the seam vacated by the rotating safety, so watch for a receiver working from the cloud side across the field since the free safety alone cannot cover that much ground. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge on the cloud side can overload this coverage because the cloud corner is not a true blitzer, so if you see a nickel blitz stacked to that side expect an unblocked rusher unless you check protection.
Call this on early downs or third and short when you expect the offense to attack the boundary with quick game like slants, out routes, or bubble screens toward your cloud corner. Before the snap identify which side you want the cloud rotation on and flip the play if the offensive formation stacks receivers to one side, since the cloud defender needs to be aligned to the trips or two receiver side for maximum leverage. User the cloud corner yourself in competitive play so you can squeeze the flat and jump any quick out or hitch route, then let the AI handle the deep third responsibilities. Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Buzz Match in the same set to disguise your rotation post snap, since all three show a similar pre snap shell but roll coverage in different directions. Mix in Cover 3 Match on early downs to keep the offense guessing whether you are in a true cloud spot drop or a match coverage that can lock onto verticals from number two.
