Roll Cover 3 Cloud is a zone defense call out of the 3-3 Over Jack Nickel package that rolls the safeties and corners into a three deep, four under shell with a cloud (corner) technique to the strength called. The cloud corner sits outside in, squatting on flat routes and forcing the quarterback to work the ball inside where the underneath defenders and deep third safety can close on throws. This is not a blitz or a man beater, it is a spot drop zone coverage designed to funnel receivers into traffic, and the primary read progression is the flat to curl area first, then the deep middle third safety reading the quarterback's eyes to jump any inside breaking routes over the middle.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment on the cloud side, if the corner is squatted tight to the line at roughly five to seven yards it confirms the cloud technique and tells you flat routes are covered. Post-snap, key the quarterback's first read, if his eyes go to the flat or out route on the cloud side, trust your corner to close and use your user defender to jump any secondary in cut route behind it. Watch for offenses running smash concepts or corner routes to the cloud side, since a good quarterback will throw the corner route over the top of the cloud defender if your deep third safety does not rotate over in time. Diagnose trips or bunch formations early, since these can overload the cloud side flat defender and create natural picks, requiring your linebacker or nickel defender to fight through traffic quickly. This shell gets beaten by four verticals or dagger concepts that stress the deep middle third, so if you see two receivers releasing vertically into the same third, be ready to have your deep safety jump the inside seam before it develops into a explosive completion.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack the flats or run smoke and quick out concepts, since the cloud corner is sitting right on top of those throws.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is aligning into a stack or bunch to the cloud side, since that can create a natural pick or rub that stresses the flat defender, so consider shading your user defender or hot routing the underneath zone deeper to compensate.
Use your user controlled defender to sit in the curl to flat area on the cloud side and jump any hitch, out, or speed out route, since that is exactly what this shell is built to take away.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Buzz Match in your play calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on corner alignment alone, since Sky rolls the safety down as the extra flat defender while Cloud keeps the corner outside, forcing pre-snap indecision.
Avoid calling this against heavy vertical stack releases or four verticals concepts, since the deep third defenders can get stressed if the offense stacks two receivers deep on one side, so mix in Cover 3 Match or Cover 4 Quarters when you diagnose a vertical shell attack.
