The primary read is the underneath trap defender: if the flat or hook defender bites on a shallow route or curl, work the middle read progression from the intermediate crosser to the checkdown, since the deep safeties are locked into their halves and will not help over the top on shorter throws.
Watch the quarterback's eyes immediately after the snap to see if he is baiting the trap defender with a pump fake toward the flat or shallow zone. Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment, if both safeties are sitting deep at ten to twelve yards you are likely seeing a two high shell that confirms the trap disguise is intact.
