Cover 3 Sky is a zone coverage call out of the 3-3 Over Jack set in Nickel personnel, dropping three deep defenders and four underneath with the strong safety rotating down into the box to support the run and take away flat/curl throws. This is a zone defense built to defend the run first while still holding up against quick passing concepts, since the Sky rotation gives an extra hat in the box compared to a Cloud rotation. The primary read progression for the defense is the flow of the running back and quarterback eyes, with the Mike linebacker reading run/pass and the deep third defenders reading the number two receiver to the middle of the field for any vertical or crossing threats.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a run heavy personnel grouping or bunch/stack formation, both of which this call handles well due to the extra box defender. Post-snap, key the strong safety's fill lane against inside zone and gap runs, he is your primary force player in the run fit. Watch the number two receiver's release, if he pushes vertical immediately that is your signal a seam or dig route is coming that the deep middle defender must rob. This shell struggles against quick out and flat combinations to the weak side since the corner is deep and the flat defender has wide ground to cover, so respect three step game to the open side. If the offense runs levels or drive concepts underneath, trust your underneath zone defenders to stay disciplined and not bite on the shallow crosser, or the intermediate window opens up for a big gain.
Call this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, when you expect run or play action based on personnel and formation tendencies.
Check pre-snap for the strong safety alignment, if he is cheating up into the box that tells you Sky rotation is likely and you have extra run support but a soft flat.
Use the flat defender's hot route sparingly, widen him only if you scout heavy flat/out concepts, otherwise leave the defense stock to keep integrity against the run.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Cloud and Roll Cover 3 Cloud in your play-calling sequence so offenses cannot key on the strong safety's run fit every snap.
User the deep middle third defender to rob any dig or post route crossing the field, since that is the biggest hole in a static three deep shell.
