Breakdown

FS Will Blitz 0 is a zero coverage blitz package out of the 3-3 Over Jack Nickel front that brings the free safety and the Will linebacker on a combined pressure to overload the protection. Since it is Cover 0 behind the blitz, every eligible receiver is locked in man coverage with no deep safety help, so this is a pure gambling call designed to force a fast throw or a negative play. The primary read for the defense is simultaneous: track the free safety and Will linebacker rush lanes off the snap while the corners and remaining linebackers mirror their man assignments, and the pressure itself is the "first read" since it dictates whether the quarterback gets the ball out before the double team pressure arrives.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for stacked or bunched receivers, since that alignment lets receivers pick your man defenders on rub routes and beats zero coverage instantly. Watch running back alignment, if the back stays in as a check release blocker that is a signal the quarterback expects immediate pressure and plans to get the ball out in one or two steps. Post-snap, key the slot corner and nickel defender's man leverage, if they lose outside leverage on a quick out or speed out the free safety blitz will not arrive in time to bail them out. This call is shut down by hot routes into hitches and quick slants since there is no underneath zone defender to help, so if the offense sees Cover 0 pre-snap expect an instant throw beater. Look for the offense to counter with a screen or draw the moment they diagnose zero coverage, so track the running back's release path closely instead of following the initial pass read.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and long or in two minute situations when you need a negative play or a turnover to change field position.

Identify pre-snap if the offense is in a max protect or empty look, since empty formations neutralize the extra rushers and turn this into a coverage bust waiting to happen against your man defenders.

User the free safety on the blitz path to control your most athletic rusher and time the snap so you are not exposed on a delayed handoff or draw that can gash the vacated middle of the field.

Pair this call with Edge Blitz 0 and Cover 1 LB Blitz earlier in a series so the quarterback cannot sit on the fact that every pressure look is zero coverage, keeping the run fits honest against play action.

Avoid calling this on early downs against spread run concepts or RPOs, since the aggressive rush angles from the Will and free safety open cutback lanes for zone read and inside zone runs.
