Breakdown

Edge Blitz 3 is an exotic pressure package out of the 3-3 Over Jack Nickel front designed to bring off-tackle heat while dropping into a Cover 3 shell behind it. Both edge rushers crash the tackle box off the snap while a hybrid Jack linebacker times up a delayed rush lane, and the remaining defenders fall into a three deep, four under shell to protect against the pass. This is a blitz beater killer against slower reacting quarterbacks, and the primary read is getting the user controlled defender to identify the free rusher off the edge before working outside in coverage to close on the flat and curl zones.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check if the offense has an extra blocker (TE or RB) aligned to the pressure side, that is your indicator the offense anticipates the edge rush. Identify empty backfield or four wide sets, since those formations often can't slow down both edge rushers and this play wins fast against them. Post-snap, watch for the quarterback's eyes going to a hot route or quick out to the flat, that is the zone defender's cue to jump the throwing lane in the Cover 3 shell. This play struggles against max protect looks with two backs staying in, so check backfield personnel before the snap to decide if you should call it or check to a coverage play instead. Beware of play-action rollouts from spread option teams, since the delayed Jack rush can be baited out of position if the quarterback sells the run fake convincingly.

Usage Tips

Call this on early down passing situations when you suspect the offense is sitting in a quick game or shotgun spread look, since the edge pressure disrupts three step drops before protection can adjust.

Use pre-snap motion or shifts from the offense as your key: if they slide protection toward the Jack side, user the opposite edge rusher for a cleaner home run alley.

Mix Edge Blitz 3 with Edge Blitz 0 in the same set to keep the quarterback guessing between a three deep drop and a full man blitz look, both share similar initial rush paths so tendencies stay hidden.

On third and medium, pair this call after running Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 3 Sky on early downs so the offense sees a static shell before you dial up the heat.

User the Jack linebacker on the delayed blitz timing rather than leaving it on AI, manual control lets you adjust the rush lane if the running back stays in to chip block.
