Breakdown

Dbl Safety Blitz is a five or six man pressure package out of the Nickel 4-2-5 that sends both safeties on delayed blitz paths while the front six occupies the offensive line with a mix of edge rush and interior stunts. The secondary is left in a two man under or man free shell with the slot corner and outside corners holding their assignments while the linebackers spy or drop into shallow zones to take away quick game answers. This is a blitz call built to create chaos against the pass, so the primary read progression for the defense is simple: confirm the free rusher off the safety blitz, and if the quarterback holds the ball, close the throwing lanes underneath before the hot route or check down develops.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back alignment pre-snap, since an offset back to the blitz side often signals a check to a cut block or chip that can slow down the safety rush. Read the offensive line splits after the snap, if the tackles widen out expect an edge based protection that leaves the middle of the field open for the blitzing safety to run through. This call is highly effective against man beater route combos and quick game concepts that rely on rhythm throws, since the delayed pressure disrupts timing before receivers separate. It gets shut down by max protect schemes with seven or eight blockers, empty formations with all quick outs, and RPO run reads where the quarterback pulls the ball before the blitz arrives. Post-snap, key the tight end or slot receiver working into the vacated safety zone, since that is the first window an offense will attack once they diagnose the double safety pressure.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a quick game passing attack, since the delayed safety blitz needs a beat to develop and gets exposed on obvious third and long draws or screens.

Pre-snap, check the offensive personnel and identify if they have a running back or tight end who can chip the blitzing safety, then user the free defender toward that gap to disguise which safety is coming.

If the offense shows an empty or spread look with no help for the blitzing safeties, stay in the call, but against heavy run personnel bail out to a base front like Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 3 Sky to avoid getting gashed on the ground.

Combine Dbl Safety Blitz with Cover 1 LB Blitz or FS Will Blitz 0 in the same set to keep the quarterback guessing on which defender is the extra rusher, since all three plays start from similar Nickel alignments but attack different gaps.

Manually spy the running back with your user defender if you are worried about a hot route conversion beating the blitz, since the linebackers are often occupied with initial run fits before sinking into coverage.
