Hot Blitz 3 brings a five man pressure package out of the 3-3 Load Mug front while dropping into Cover 3 zone behind it. Both outside linebackers rush off the edges, the middle backer blitzes through the A gap, and the diagram shows the two deep outside defenders sinking to the sideline thirds while a shallow underneath defender crosses to fill the middle hook, with the far right hook zone dropping to a shorter landmark. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while still keeping three deep defenders in the picture, so your primary read is watching where the quarterback's protection breaks down first: if he escapes the interior rush, the shallow crossing zone defender and the deep middle third are your last lines of defense against any dump off or crosser trying to sit behind the blitz.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment: if both safeties are shaded deep and corners are playing off, this Cover 3 shell is already suited to take away vertical shots down the sideline. Watch the offensive line for slide protection toward the interior blitzer, which tells you if the quarterback's hot read will beat your rush before the coverage rotates into place. Post-snap, key the running back and tight end for check release routes into the shallow crossing zone, since that underneath defender is your primary defender against quick game concepts designed to beat blitzes. This play struggles against quick slants and hitches thrown before the rush gets home, so if the offense is hot routing receivers into the vacated underneath area immediately after the snap, expect completions there unless you user that zone defender aggressively. Man beater route combos with immediate breaks at the line will test this call, while teams that hold the ball or run play action into empty zones give this blitz its best chance to disrupt the play behind the line of scrimmage.
Usage Tips
Call Hot Blitz 3 on early downs when you expect a run or a quick game passing concept, since the underneath zone rotation covers hot routes and stick concepts that attack blitzes. Use pre-snap motion checks to see if the offense shifts protection toward the mug look, and if they slide the line away from the interior blitzer, be ready to user the middle linebacker for a free run at the quarterback. Mix this with Nickel Blitz 2 and Nickel Blitz 1 from the same set so opponents cannot key on which gap the pressure is coming from based on your pre-snap alignment. This play shines on third and medium to third and long when quarterbacks are looking to get the ball out fast against pressure, since the zone drops close passing lanes to quick outs and slants. Avoid calling it into empty formations with fast motion, since the zone coverage can get stretched horizontally before the rush arrives.
