Nickel Blitz 3 out of the 3-3 Load Mug set brings a five-man pressure package while dropping into Cover 3 zone behind it. This is a zone blitz built to disguise the rush and confuse blocking assignments, so the primary read is identifying which of the front seven is dropping into the shallow flat zones versus which is coming as a true rusher off the edge or through the A-gap.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the offensive line for six or seven pass protectors, since a five-man zone blitz with a mugged linebacker is designed to create a free runner if the protection slides the wrong direction. Watch the running back and tight end release patterns, since any blitz pickup responsibility they take on tells you where the underneath hole in the zone will open up. Post-snap, track the deep third defenders first, this beats vertical shots down the sideline and any go route or deep out because the corners are already sitting in their thirds. This coverage is vulnerable to quick hitting curl-flat combinations and any route that attacks the seam between the underneath zone defenders and the deep thirds, especially if the blitz timing is late. If the offense calls a screen or draw to attack the vacated interior, get eyes on the pulling linemen immediately since the mugged linebacker blitzing leaves a gap that a well timed draw or bubble screen can exploit before the zone reforms.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second-and-medium when the offense is likely to call quick game or drop back protection that cannot handle a disguised extra rusher.
Show a two-high shell pre-snap and rotate the safety down at the snap to keep the quarterback guessing on whether it is Cover 3 or a two-deep look.
Mix this call with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Cloud from the same set so the offense cannot key on corner leverage or safety rotation based on formation alone.
If the user senses a quick game beater, spy the shallow crosser with the nickel defender instead of blitzing him, turning this into a de facto Cover 3 Match rep.
Pair with LB Blitz 0 and Nickel Blitz 0 on money downs so all-out pressure calls and zone blitz calls look identical before the snap.
