Nickel Blitz 2 is a five-man pressure package out of 3-3 Load Mug that drops into a two deep, four under zone shell behind the rush. The diagram shows two deep half safeties reading the quarterback, four underneath defenders spaced across the box in shallow zone drops, and both slot corners bailing into curl-flat responsibilities while the interior sends extra rushers off the edges. This is a zone blitz beater killer disguised as pressure: the coverage stays sound with two deep zone beaters overloaded and Cover 2 principles underneath, while the blitz packages the extra rusher to speed up the quarterback's first read.
Watch for the deep half safeties squeezing seam routes, since this shell is vulnerable to any route stemmed between the numbers and the deep half boundary. This beats teams that rely on quick game and shallow crosses because the underneath zone defenders are spaced to funnel receivers into traffic. It gets exposed by four verticals or double moves that stress both deep safeties at once, especially if the extra rusher fails to affect the quarterback's timing. Pre-snap, check cornerback depth on the outside receivers, if they are playing off coverage it confirms the zone shell rather than man match. Post-snap, key the curl-flat defenders immediately, if they widen too fast to the flat the seam behind them opens up for a big play against this Cover 2 blitz look.
Use this on early downs or third and medium when you want pressure without fully exposing your defense to a deep shot. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is sliding protection toward the Mug side, since the free rusher usually comes from the opposite edge. Motion check the offense first, if you see a running back or tight end shift, consider checking to Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud from this same set to disguise the blitz look. Pair this call with Nickel Blitz 0 and Nickel Blitz 1 in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key your five-man rush from the pre-snap picture. Bait the quarterback into the flat with the curl-flat defenders sitting shallow, then close hard with a user lurk if you drop the middle linebacker into a shallow crossing lane.
