Breakdown

DB Blitz Tex 3 is a five man pressure package out of the 2-4 Single Mug front that brings a nickel defensive back off the edge on a tex blitz path (looping exchange with the interior rusher) while dropping into a Cover 3 shell behind it. The three deep defenders run vertical zone drops to split the field into thirds, and the underneath purple zones flash out to the flat and hook areas to account for check downs and quick game. This is a zone blitz built to disguise pressure while still holding three deep, making it a strong answer against both quick man beaters and shallow zone beater concepts, with the primary read being the interior blitzer's stunt path drawing the guard before the exchange rusher loops free off the edge.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check if the offense slides protection toward the Mug alignment, which tells you they have identified the blitz side and you may want to check to a different call in the set. Post-snap, watch the tex exchange rusher's loop, if the running back stays in to chip or scan instead of releasing, the free rusher may get picked up and you will need the deep thirds to hold longer. This look is strong against man beater crossers and shallow drags since the underneath zone defenders sit in those throwing lanes before the receiver can separate. It is vulnerable to quick RPO game and screens to the flat since the zone drops open space vertically for a beat while everyone reads run action. Watch the seams between the deep third defenders, four vertical stacks or double moves attacking the numbers can split the thirds if the pressure does not get home in time.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a quick game or shallow crosser concept since the underneath purple zones squeeze those throwing lanes fast.

Disguise the Mug look before the snap by walking the nickel defender up late so the offense cannot get a clean pre-snap ID on where the extra rusher is coming from.

User the looping tex rusher yourself if you want to manually time the exchange and beat blockers who are keying the defensive line simulation instead of the real blitzer.

Pair this with Cov 3 Buzz Match and Nickel Blitz 3 in the same set so the offense sees similar shells but cannot key the exact pressure source snap to snap.

Avoid calling this against heavy max protect empty sets since the tex exchange needs natural gaps to loop through, and extra blockers can pick it up before the deep thirds are stressed.
