Breakdown

Blitz Tex 3 Sim 3 is a simulated pressure package out of the Nickel 2-4 Single Mug front that shows a Cover 3 shell behind a five-man rush look. The diagram shows both interior linebackers dropping to a shallow zone spot underneath while the front generates a stunt or Tex exchange up front, with the three deep defenders rotating into thirds and the flanking defenders sinking into curl-flat zones. This is a zone beater killer disguised as a blitz, designed to bait the quarterback into thinking pressure is coming while dropping extra bodies into underneath zones, so the primary read is the two shallow zone droppers who wall off quick game and force the quarterback to hold the ball long enough for the simulated rush to get home.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are shaded deep with no rotation shown, the quarterback should expect this simulated Cover 3 look rather than true pressure. Look for the two off-ball linebackers cheating toward the line of scrimmage before the snap, that alignment is the tell for the Tex exchange and simulated blitz rather than a true four or five man rush. Post-snap, identify the zone droppers sinking to shallow depth immediately, this kills quick hitters, shallow crossers, and spot concepts that rely on beating man coverage or blitz-vacated zones. This coverage is vulnerable to intermediate crossing routes and deep out-breaking routes that attack the seams between the underneath zone droppers and the deep thirds, since the underneath defenders are shallow and not full-field zone. If the offense identifies the sim pressure look and checks to a play-action rollout or deep shot off it, the defense is exposed because the deep third defenders can be isolated if the rush does not affect the quarterback's platform.

Usage Tips

Disguise this call by mixing it in after showing base Cover 3 Buzz Match or Cover 4 Quarters from the same 2-4 Single Mug set so the offense cannot key on personnel or depth pre-snap.

Use this on third and medium to third and long when the offense is likely to call quick game or spacing concepts, since the underneath zone droppers are designed to sit on shallow crossers and hitches.

Watch the play clock and snap timing so your user defender can bail into the deep third immediately, since the simulated pressure only works if the coverage rotation is disguised until the ball is snapped.

Pair this with DB Blitz Tex 3 or Nickel Blitz 3 in your play-calling sequence so the offense sees similar pre-snap alignments but gets different pressure and coverage answers each time.

User the underneath zone defender closest to the quarterback's likely first read to jump shallow drags or spot routes, since the design bets on the quarterback trusting his first look against what he thinks is man or all-out blitz.
