Breakdown

Overload 3 Seam is a Cover 3 overload blitz out of the Nickel Over set that brings five pressure defenders to one side while dropping into a three deep, three under zone shell behind it. The diagram shows both outside cornerbacks pressing into deep thirds with the seam routes released vertically by the slot defenders, while the three underneath defenders (two squares and a triangle) crash hard toward the overloaded edge, leaving the backside flat and curl areas thinned out. This is a zone based blitz designed to disguise pressure while still playing sound zone behind it, with the primary read progression starting at the seam route attacked by the overload side and working to the opposite deep third if the quarterback climbs the pocket away from pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back's alignment pre-snap since he is the key blocker who can pick up the overload if he stays in, so attack the side he is not aligned to. Key the offensive line splits and any tight end or extra blocker shifting toward the overload side, which tells you the protection is adjusting and you may need to bail into coverage instead of blitzing. Post-snap, track the quarterback's eyes to the seam route first since that is the primary answer to your zone drop underneath. If the quarterback climbs away from the pressure, your deep third defenders must stay disciplined and not bite on the seam too early or you leave the opposite third exposed. This beats slide protections and man blocking schemes that cannot account for the extra rusher, but hot routes and quick game to the backside flat can expose it if your underneath defenders overcommit to the overload.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to protect with a slide scheme that cannot handle a numbers overload on one edge.

Identify the offensive protection pre-snap and bring the overload to the side with the fewest blockers, usually away from the running back's help.

Use the pre-snap defender count to bait the quarterback into a quick throw, then user the closest underneath defender to jump the hot route or check down.

Disguise the overload by walking your slot defender up late and rotating your safety after the snap so the offense cannot get a clean pre-snap coverage read.
