Tampa 2 out of the Nickel Over set is a zone coverage shell built to defend the deep middle while still holding two deep safety help. The Mike linebacker drops straight down the seam to rob any deep crossing routes, working in tandem with both safeties over the top to form a modified two deep shell. Underneath, the two corners sink into the flat zones and the remaining linebackers spread horizontally to wall off the shallow crossers and hooks, taking away quick game and man beater concepts.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which confirms the offense expects zone and may try to attack the seams or flats. Post-snap, track the Mike linebacker's drop into the deep middle to bait quarterbacks into throwing seam routes right into his zone. This shell shuts down deep posts, skinny posts, and four verticals because of the extra deep middle defender. It is vulnerable to quick outs and flat routes if your corners drop too deep too fast, so user flat defenders can jump those throws. Watch offensive alignment for stacked or bunch formations since they often signal a designed pick or rub route to beat the underneath zone spacing.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and long when you expect a vertical shot play or deep crossing route from the offense.
Key the quarterback's eyes before the snap. If you see stacked receivers or double moves designed to attack the deep middle, this is your answer.
Use the middle linebacker's drop as insurance against posts and deep digs, but be ready to user him if the tight end tries to sneak into the seam.
Pair this with Cover 2 Invert or Cover 2 Man in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on the deep middle bracket every snap.
Avoid calling this against heavy run formations since the underneath defenders are spread wide and can be gashed on inside zone or power runs.
