Cover 1 LB Blitz brings a linebacker off the edge as an extra rusher while the defense plays man coverage across the board with a single deep safety over the top. The diagram shows five underneath defenders converging downhill on blitz paths, tight press alignment on the outside receivers, and a lone deep safety sitting in the middle of the field to erase any big play over the top. This is a man blitz designed to create pressure with a numbers advantage up front while betting the deep half safety and press corners can hold up on an island against the pass catchers.
Pre-snap, identify the single high safety and press man alignment on the outside receivers to confirm this is true Cover 1 before the snap. Post-snap, track the blitzing linebacker's angle since he is unblocked if the offensive line slides protection away from his gap, giving an instant pressure win. This beats slow developing man beater concepts and drag routes that need extra time to clear underneath traffic since the blitz collapses the pocket before those routes finish. It gets exposed by quick game concepts like slants and hitches, and especially by any RPO or screen game that attacks the vacated area left by the blitzing linebacker. Watch for a user-controlled defender jumping the blitz lane late to disguise the rush, and respect running back leak outs into the flat since the linebacker blitz opens a soft spot underneath.
Call this on early or mid down and distance when you expect a quick game or short drop from the offense since the extra rusher wins with speed to the quarterback before deep routes develop.
Check the pre-snap alignment for a single high safety and press corners, if you see two safeties deep bail out to a different Cover 1 or Cover 3 call since the blitz timing will not match the coverage.
Use hot routes to spike the underneath blitzer into a cleaner gap if the offensive line shows heavy protection or a max protect look with extra blockers staying in.
Pair this play with Cover 1 Robber Press or Cover 1 Hole in your call sheet sequence so the offense cannot key blitz versus static man coverage based on pre-snap safety depth alone.
Mix in Cover 1 Contain on the next series to disguise the same shell while dropping the same blitzer into a spy look, keeping the quarterback guessing on where the extra rusher comes from.
