Breakdown

Edge Blitz 0 is a Cover 0 zero blitz out of the Nickel 4-2-5 Over set that brings pressure off both edges while leaving every underneath defender on an island in man coverage. The diagram shows five defenders at the line converging hard toward the middle with red arrows, indicating simultaneous edge rushers and interior blitzers crashing the pocket with no safety help over the top. This is a max pressure package designed to force a quick, incorrect throw rather than a coverage beater. Since there is no deep safety shown, the primary "read progression" for the defense is simply get to the quarterback before the man coverage on an island breaks down, with both edge rushers as the first key and any delayed interior blitzer as the second wave if the quarterback escapes the pocket.

Defensive Reads

Check the box count before the snap, if the offense has six or more blockers available this call can get beat by a delayed screen or draw since every defender is either rushing or in man coverage. Watch for stacked or bunch receiver alignments, since Cover 0 man coverage struggles to fight through natural rub routes and pick concepts. Identify if the quarterback has a spy or extra protection assigned to the edge, because that blocker can neutralize one of your rushers and buy time for a deep shot. Post snap, track the running back out of the backfield immediately since there is no underneath zone defender to account for a check down or swing route against the blitz. This call dominates against empty or spread sets with no chip protection, but gets exposed against heavy play action rollouts where extra blockers pick up the edge rushers.

Usage Tips

Only call Edge Blitz 0 when you have a clear pre-snap read that the offense is not running a quick game or hot route beater, since this is true Cover 0 with zero deep help.

Use it on third and long or in two minute situations where the offense needs extra time to develop routes downfield, punishing them with home run edge speed.

Bait the quarterback with a no blitz look pre-snap, then bring the edge rushers late off the snap to disguise the zero coverage look.

Pair this call in your play sequence with Cover 1 SS Blitz or Cover 1 LB Blitz earlier in the series so the offense cannot key on the same pre-snap alignment every time you dial up pressure.

If the user controls a linebacker or defensive back before the snap, mirror the slot receiver or tightest alignment threat to erase any free access releases on the perimeter.
