Nickel Blitz 3 brings a five man pressure package out of the Nickel 4-2-5 personnel while dropping into a Cover 3 shell behind it. Both outside cornerbacks sink into deep thirds off their press alignment, the slot corner works an underneath crossing angle to the opposite flat, and the strong safety spins down to rob the middle flat while the deep safety bails to the far side flat, leaving three underneath defenders scraping downhill on the blitz. This is a zone based blitz beater killer for the defense, designed to disguise a Cover 3 look with a DB blitz component that adds numbers to the rush without fully sacrificing deep coverage integrity, so the primary read for the offense facing this is to attack the vacated middle and flat voids created by the blitzing defensive back before the rush gets home.
Pre-snap, check the offensive personnel and protection identifiers, if you see max protect or six blockers the blitz will likely get picked up so consider audibling to a standard Cover 3 call instead. Key the running back and tight end release points post-snap, since a leaking back into the flat can exploit the vacated underneath zone before the pass rush closes the pocket. Watch for quick game concepts like slants and stick routes that attack the intermediate middle void left by the blitzing defensive back, this is the primary weakness of the coverage. This call is strong against man beater route combos and shallow crossers because the underneath defenders are moving downhill into the throwing lanes, but it can be exposed by quick RPO reads if the quarterback recognizes the pressure before the snap. Post-snap, track the rush timing against the offensive line slide protection, if the extra rusher is picked up cleanly you will need the deep thirds to hold up against verticals since the underneath zone has fewer eyes to help.
Bring this on early down and medium distance snaps when you have already shown Cover 3 shells to condition the offense into expecting a standard drop, then mix in the extra DB pressure to catch slow developing reads.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running max protect or empty, since this blitz is most effective against two back or one back sets that cannot pick up the extra rusher cleanly.
User the slot blitzer manually if you want to time the pressure against the shotgun snap count, but only if you trust your zone drops to hold up without help underneath.
Hot route the strong safety or the underneath defender to widen the flat responsibility if you are worried about quick screens or flare routes attacking the vacated edge.
Sequence this with Cover 3 Sky or Nickel Sim 2 from the same set so the offense sees a similar shell pre-snap and cannot key the extra rusher until after the ball is snapped.
