Cover 4 Quarters is a four deep, three under zone shell out of the Nickel Over set that splits the field into quarter deep zones for the two corners and two safeties while the underneath defenders wall off the flats and hook zones. The diagram shows both outside corners sinking deep with inside leverage, the deep safety in the middle bracketing the intermediate crossers, and the underneath defenders spot dropping to the flats and curl areas. This is a zone based coverage designed to defend against four verticals, deep shots, and play action, forcing the quarterback to check down underneath rather than attack the deep quarters.

Read the offensive formation pre-snap and check for stacked or bunch releases that can create natural picks on your underneath defenders, and be ready to bump your corners with a pre-snap adjustment
