Double Bracket

Nickel·Over·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Double Bracket is a man coverage beater out of the Nickel Over set, showing four vertical stem releases from the receivers and two backs or tight ends releasing into short option routes underneath. The diagram shows all four outside targets running downfield with the two inside options sitting in the middle of the field, creating a high low stress on man defenders who have to run with vertical stems while the underneath options work free against trailing linebackers. This is a man to man passing concept, not a zone beater or run play, and the primary read progression starts with the vertical stems for a big play shot before working down to the two option routes underneath if the safety help brackets the deep routes.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals bracket coverage on the outside verticals and should push your read to the underneath option routes immediately. If linebackers walk up and show blitz, expect one of the middle option routes to be the hot read since protection may not hold up long enough for the deep stems to develop. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal shell for this play, since it isolates your outside receivers on vertical stems against single coverage. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with squatting corners can undercut the option routes, so key the flat and curl defenders after the snap to see if they carry the verticals or sit in zone drops. A user controlled safety lurking in the middle of the field is the biggest threat to the two option routes, so track that defender post-snap before throwing into the middle window.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like press corners or a single high safety rotated to help over the top before committing to the vertical shots.

If the defense shows two deep safeties, hot route one of the outside verticals into a comeback or dig to prevent a low percentage deep throw into double coverage.

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you expect man pressure, since the underneath option routes give you a built in answer against blitzes.

Pair Double Bracket with Cover 2 Man or Cover 1 Hole from this set as complementary calls, forcing the defense to respect verticals before you dial up a shorter option based concept.

Against aggressive user linebackers who jump the underneath routes, look immediately to the vertical stems since the defender vacated coverage responsibility.
