The two buzz defenders (typically your safeties or overhang defenders) sink underneath while the rest of the defense locks receivers in man to man, so this is designed to squeeze quick game and shallow crossers while still holding up against verticals down the field. Your primary read starts with the buzz defenders reading quarterback eyes for the underneath throw, then transitioning to help over the top if the quarterback climbs the pocket looking for a deep shot.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two receiver stack or bunch formations pre snap, since picks and rubs are the main way offenses beat straight man coverage like this. Read the running back release out of the backfield first, because with only one true linebacker in this personnel, any check down or wheel route can create a mismatch if you do not user down to help. Post snap, key the quarterback's eyes to see if he is working a shallow crosser or drag, since your buzz defenders are sitting exactly on that route level and should undercut it for a pick six opportunity. This coverage struggles against four verticals or trips concepts that flood one side, so if you see three receivers releasing vertically to one side pre snap, consider audibling to Cover 3 Match or Cover 4 Quarters instead. Man Double Buzz shuts down slot fades, comebacks, and quick outs since your corners have inside leverage help, but it is vulnerable to any rub route combination designed to pick off the trailing defender.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect quick game or shallow crossers, since the buzz defenders are sitting on those throws while your corners stay locked in man underneath. Pre snap, identify if the offense is running bunch or stack releases, and if you see it, consider audible into Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 Robber Show 2 from this same set to get an extra rat in the middle without giving up the man matchups. User the buzz defender closest to the strength of the formation so you can jump the number two receiver on any shallow drag or spot route, since that is the primary route this coverage is designed to erase. Mix this with Cover 2 Man and Cover 1 QB Contain in your play calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on your leverage or blitz tempo from snap to snap. Against heavy play action teams, be ready to sink your user defender quickly since Double Buzz still asks your linebacker to hold the middle of the field alone against any delayed releases.
