Overview

Superstar Blitz Defense is a 198 play defensive Superstar archetype book that treats sub packages as the base defense. Dime leads the way at 75 plays (38%) across 3 sets, Nickel follows at 66 plays (33%) across 3 sets, and together those two formations account for 71% of everything you can call. That is a nickel and dime shell with blitz concepts layered on top of it, which is exactly what the name promises: pressure out of light boxes where your coverage defenders are actual corners and safeties instead of linebackers stuck covering slots.

The play pool covers Cover 4 and Quarters, Cover 3 and Cover 3 Buzz, Cover 2 and Tampa 2, Cover 1 and Cover 1 Hole, plus Blitz and LB Blitz families, so you can run the same pressure look with three different coverage shells behind it. Sample calls like 3 Deep Blitz and 3 Rat Zone show the intent clearly: send extra rushers while keeping a deep zone umbrella or a rat defender in the hole to kill drags and crossers. Man concepts such as Cover 1 Contain and 1 Double Wr1 give you a QB spy style edge assignment and a bracket on the opponent's primary receiver, which is the single most valuable tool in this book against a one read user.

Behind the sub packages, 4-3 carries 33 plays (17%) across 3 sets as your only true base front, Goal Line Defense adds 12 plays across 2 sets, and Prevent and Quarter each get 6 plays from a single set. The personnel list runs Base 4-3, Nickel 4-2-5, Dime 4-1-6, Big Dime 4-1-6, 6-2-3, Big Quarter 3-1-7 and Big Quarter 1-3-7, so you get a 1-3-7 dime and quarter alignment for obvious throwing downs and a 6-2-3 goal line wall for the other extreme. You pick this book because you want to win the passing game with man pressure and disguised zone from Dime and Nickel, and you are comfortable living with only 33 plays of real run fitting personnel.

Scheme Fit

Superstar Blitz Defense wants a roster stacked with coverage defensive backs: three or more corners who can play man, plus two safeties with the speed and zone coverage ratings to handle deep quarters, since 71% of your calls put five or six of them on the field. You need at least one edge rusher who can win one on one without help, because the Blitz and LB Blitz concepts are built on light boxes, and a linebacker with high play recognition and zone coverage to man the rat and hole assignments in 3 Rat Zone and Cover 1 Hole. This is the book for a user defender who wants to control a safety or slot corner every snap, trusts their pre-snap shifts and pinches to disguise pressure, and is willing to accept giving up yards on the ground to take away the pass.

Strengths

  • Dime at 38% across 3 sets gives you enough variety to build a full game plan out of one formation, meaning you can disguise Cover 4, Cover 1 Hole and 3 Deep Blitz from identical pre-snap alignments and force the offense to read your defenders rather than your personnel.
  • Dime and Nickel combining for 141 of 198 plays means your audible package can be built entirely from 4-1-6 and 4-2-5 personnel, so you never have to sub out between plays and never get caught with linebackers on slot receivers after a no huddle tempo call.
  • The Cover 1 and Man Coverage family, including 1 Double Wr1 and Cover 1 Contain, pairs bracket coverage on the offense's best receiver with a contain rusher, which is the cleanest answer in this book to scrambling quarterbacks and to opponents who force feed one target.
  • Cover 3 Buzz, Tampa 2 and 3 Rat Zone give you three different ways to cover the middle hook window, so you can shut down drags, sit routes and mesh concepts without ever showing the same rat or buzz defender twice in a series.
  • Big Quarter 3-1-7 and Big Quarter 1-3-7 personnel out of the Quarter set gives you a seven defensive back look for third and long and end of half situations, something a book weighted toward base fronts simply cannot align to.

Weaknesses

  • Only 33 run capable base plays in 4-3 across 3 sets means a committed inside run game with heavy personnel will grind you, and once you are stuck in Dime or Nickel you are asking a 4-1-6 or 4-2-5 front to fit gaps it was never built for.
  • This is the smallest of the three defensive Superstar playbooks, so an opponent who has seen your setups a few times has a very short list of formations to memorize: Dime, Nickel and 4-3 cover 88% of your calls.
  • Prevent gets only 6 plays from a single set, which leaves you thin on true end of game clock killing shells and often forced to fake it with a Cover 4 or Quarters call that does not squeeze the sideline the same way.
  • Goal Line Defense is just 12 plays across 2 sets with 6-2-3 personnel, so short yardage and inside the five defense is a coin flip on whether you have the right fit, and there is no wide range of goal line pressure to rotate through.
  • The blitz heavy identity cuts both ways: LB Blitz and Blitz calls out of light boxes leave you exposed to play action rollouts and quick screens, and a user who blocks your pressure once can attack the vacated hook and flat zones repeatedly.

Usage Tips

Build your primary audible package out of all 3 Dime sets and set 1 Double Wr1 as your safe call on any second and long or third and 6 plus, then user the deep middle so the bracket handles the offense's top receiver while you rob the seam.

Keep Nickel as your standard down defense on first and 10 and second and medium, rotating Cover 3 Buzz, Tampa 2 and 60 Half Out so the offense never gets a clean pre-snap read on whether the flat is open.

Reserve the 4-3 sets for opponents who show heavy personnel or run the ball on first down twice in a row, and check into it early rather than trying to stop power runs with Dime 4-1-6 gap fits.

Save the Quarter set and its Big Quarter 3-1-7 and Big Quarter 1-3-7 looks for third and 15 plus and two minute situations, where the extra defensive back matters more than any pass rush you give up.

Call Goal Line Defense with 6-2-3 personnel inside the 3 and on fourth and 1, and use 3 Deep Blitz from Dime instead when the offense is backed up and likely to throw, since the deep zone umbrella covers your blitz risk.
