Overview
Over is the defensive front variation of the 4-3 that shifts the strength of the line toward the tight end side, sliding the nose tackle to a shaded alignment and putting the Sam linebacker on the edge. Unlike 4-3 Under, which slants the front weak and frees the Will to run downhill, Over stacks bodies on the strong side and asks the Will to play in space. The NT tag matters here: you are running a true base 4-3 personnel group with three linebackers on the field, so the alignment naturally leans run-first while still carrying a deep playbook of coverage shells.
Strengths
- Deep coverage menu from one look: Cover 1 Hole Press, Cover 2 Hard Flat, Cover 3 Sky, Cover 4 Quarters, Cover 6, and Tampa 2 all live in the same set, so you can disguise shells without changing personnel or tipping formation.
- Strong side run fits are excellent because the nose tackle shade plus Sam on the edge closes the tight end side C gap, which shuts down stretch, power, and lead runs into the strength.
- Press variants (Cover 1 Hole Press, Cover 1 Robber Press, Cover 3 Cloud Press, Press Quarters) let you take away quick outs, slants, and drag route combos at the line without needing manual hot routes on the corners.
- Blitz package is legitimate: Sam Edge 3, Thunder Smoke, Free Fire, Olb Fire Man, Dbl Safety Blitz, and Free Fire 3 give you three man, four man, and five man pressure looks from the same personnel, which makes your tendencies hard to read pre-snap.
- Cover 1 Hole and Cover 1 Robber Press both plant a defender in the middle window, which is where most users live with their tight end and slot on drive, dig, and shallow cross concepts.
Weaknesses
- Base 4-3 personnel gets exposed against 3x1 and 4x1 spread sets because you have linebackers matched on slot receivers in every man coverage in the set, and that is a losing rep against speed.
- The weak side is thin by design. Slants, tosses, and QB rollouts away from the shifted front hit the backside B gap and force the Will linebacker to make an unblocked tackle in space.
- Sam Edge 3 and Free Fire 3 rush too few defenders to bother a good user, so smart opponents sit in max protect and pick apart the vacated flat and seam windows.
- Dbl Safety Blitz leaves no true deep help, so any user who identifies the safety walk down before the snap can hot route a streak or a corner route and win instantly.
- Press coverage in this set can be beaten by motion and stack releases, which erase the press jam and give receivers a free run into their route stem.
Usage Tips
Use Over as your first and second down base call against 21 and 12 personnel offenses where the offense is committed to running into the tight end side.
Rotate between Cover 3 Sky, Cover 6, and Cover 4 Palms so your deep shell reads identical pre-snap and forces the offense to hold the ball an extra beat.
Manually user the middle linebacker in Tampa 2 and Cover 2 Hard Flat and take away the seam yourself. That is the exact throw both plays give up if you leave the AI to cover it.
Save Thunder Smoke and Olb Fire Man for third down and long, and pair them with a press call so the quick game does not beat the pressure.
Check out of Over into a nickel or dime set as soon as the offense goes to 11 or 10 personnel. Do not try to win a coverage rep with a linebacker on a slot in Cover 2 Man.
