Press Quarters is a Cover 4 zone shell out of the Base 4-3 Over front, with both cornerbacks showing press alignment on the outside receivers before bailing into their deep quarter zones. The four defensive backs split the field into quarters while the four linebackers drop underneath into short zone landmarks, creating a two level shell that squeezes vertical routes and forces the ball underneath. This is a zone beater killer at its core, built to take away four verticals and deep shots while linebackers rob any crossing routes in the intermediate area, so the primary read for the defense is to identify the number two receiver's release and rob the middle of the field before working out to the numbers.
Read the number two receiver's vertical stem first, since Cover 4 defenses key that release to decide whether to sink into a quarter zone or help on the number one receiver's deep route. Watch for offenses attacking the seams with four verticals or two man seam routes, since the corners must stay disciplined and not bite on hitch or comeback double moves. This shell struggles against quick option routes and RPOs where the running back or slot receiver settles in the void between the linebacker level and the safety quarters, so user linebackers need to sit those windows instead of crashing downhill immediately. Look for offenses running mesh or shallow cross concepts underneath, since the linebackers dropping into zone can get picked off by traffic if they do not stay square and read the quarterback's eyes. Press Quarters is vulnerable to hard play-action rollouts that pull linebackers out of position, so user the strong safety or a linebacker to stay disciplined against boot action and contain the edge before committing to run support.
Use this play on early downs when you expect the offense to test the deep middle or run four verticals, since the two deep safeties and press corners are designed to squeeze any go routes toward the sideline. Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for stacked or bunch receivers, and consider audibling the press corner to a bail technique if you are worried about getting beat off the line by a double move. Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud Press in your play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on your safety depth, since both shells look similar before the snap but rotate differently after the snap. On third and medium, this play forces underneath completions that your linebackers can rally to and tackle short of the sticks, making it a strong down and distance call. If you are worried about user pressure and RPOs, hot route your flat defenders slightly wider to shrink the seams between the linebacker zones and the deep quarters.
