Thunder Smoke is a safety blitz out of the Base 4-3 Over front, sending five rushers at the quarterback while dropping the remaining defenders into a tight underneath shell. The diagram shows four defenders spiking downfield hard off the snap on blitz paths (including a crossing rush lane through the middle) while two hook/curl defenders sit shallow underneath and the four X defenders hold deep zone landmarks. This is a pressure package designed to collapse the pocket before the quarterback can climb through his progression, betting that the deep coverage can hold up in a four man shell against the shortened route timing the blitz forces.
Pre-snap, check for max protect looks (extra back or tight end staying home) since that tells you the offense anticipates pressure and the blitz may get picked up. Watch the safety alignment before the snap. If both safeties are shaded to one side, the deep coverage rotation may leave a seam that a vertical route can exploit against this blitz. Post-snap, key the running back's release. If he leaks out to the flat right where your underneath defender vacated to blitz, that is the checkdown the offense will hit against this pressure. This play beats offenses that hold the ball in the pocket looking for a deep shot, since the extra rusher shortens their clock. It gets exposed by quick game concepts like slants and stick routes that get the ball out before the blitz arrives, so respect hot route sight adjustments from the offense on third and short.
Call Thunder Smoke on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to sit in shotgun and take a five step drop, since the extra rusher through the middle collapses that pocket fast.
Check the running back and tight end pre-snap. If both are staying in to block or running quick routes, the blitz has a numbers advantage and you should fire it without hesitation.
User the extra rusher coming through the interior gap and time your blitz to hit as the ball is snapped, not a beat late, or the offensive line will pick it up.
Pair this with Cover 1 Sting WK or Cover 1 Hole Press earlier in the series so the offense sees man shells first, then dial up Thunder Smoke to catch them off guard on a similar down and distance.
Avoid calling this against empty or trips bunch formations with a hot route ready, since the extra rusher can be replaced by a blocker leaking out into the vacated underneath zone.
