Breakdown

Cover 3 Cloud Press is a zone coverage play out of the 4-3 Over base personnel that rolls a cornerback down into the flat (the cloud technique) while dropping three deep defenders into thirds of the field. The diagram shows press alignment on the outside corners with the CB to the closed side (purple) sinking into an underneath flat/curl zone instead of running vertical, while both inside linebackers (tan) and the boundary corner (teal) settle into short zone drops, and three deep defenders (blue) bail into deep thirds. This is a zone beater and run support shell built to squeeze flat routes and force the quarterback to hold the ball or throw into the deep thirds, so the primary read progression for the defense is corner route to flat, then curl to deep third leverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the offensive formation for stacked or bunch releases to the cloud side, since natural picks on the flat defender are the biggest weakness of this call. Pre-snap, key the corner depth: if he is pressed and aligned outside leverage, he is likely rolling into the flat rather than playing deep man. Post-snap, read the flat defender's break, if he sinks hard under the number two receiver, the offense should attack the seam or throw the deep out behind him. This coverage shuts down quick game, hitches, and flat routes but is vulnerable to double moves and deep comebacks against the rolled down corner. Identify any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the curl to flat area, since that defender can jump underneath throws if the quarterback stares down his first read too long.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or short yardage passing situations where you expect quick game or flat concepts, since the cloud corner is designed to jump those routes immediately. Check pre-snap for stacked or bunch formations to the press side, as this coverage struggles against natural rub routes that pick off the flat defender. Use the flat zone defender as your first key post-snap and be ready to sink him under any out or flat route before working back to deep thirds. Pair this call with Cover 1 Hole Press or Press Quarters in the same set to disguise your shell, since all three show press corners pre-snap but rotate very differently after the snap. Avoid calling this into heavy four verticals or trips formations without adjusting the strong side linebacker depth, since the seams can stress the deep third defenders.
