Sam Edge 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz look out of the 4-3 Over Base personnel. The diagram shows three deep defenders bracketing the field, an underneath hook/curl defender sitting in the middle, and two flat defenders working outside, all sinking into their zones off a five man rush with two edge defenders crashing off the corners. This is a zone beater package designed to funnel throws into the deep thirds while the underneath defenders squeeze crossing routes, with the primary read progression starting at the deep middle third defender before working out to the sink flat zones on either side.
Key the quarterback eyes at the snap to identify if he is looking to the deep middle third first, since that defender is your primary rob threat against posts and deep crossers Watch for offenses attacking the seams between the hook defender and the deep thirds, since that is the natural void in this zone shell If the offense comes out in four verticals, get depth quickly with your deep third defenders to avoid getting split by the outside verts User the underneath hook defender to jump quick slants and drag routes since the zone drop naturally sits in that throwing lane This call struggles against option routes and RPOs where the receiver settles right at the sink flat depth, so be ready to close space fast with the flat defenders once you diagnose route stem
Call Sam Edge 3 on early downs when you expect play action or shots down the sideline since the deep thirds are well protected against go routes and comebacks
Watch the offensive formation for stacked or bunch releases to the flats, since the flat defenders can get picked if they do not press their landmarks quickly
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the offense is running man beater combos like flood or smash, since those concepts stress the flat zone defenders in this call
Pair this play with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 Sting WK earlier in a series so the offense cannot key on your deep thirds shell and gets caught guessing between man and zone coverage
Bring pressure with the edge rushers timed to the snap so the quarterback cannot sit in the pocket and read the sink zones underneath
