Defensive Reads
Read the offensive formation pre-snap for stacked or bunch alignments, which can create natural picks against your man defenders and force early leverage decisions. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes and stay glued to your man assignment while glancing to see if a receiver is breaking toward the safety help or away from it. Watch for double moves and comebacks, since your cornerbacks in man coverage are vulnerable to hesitation routes if they do not respect the underneath cushion. This shell struggles against trips or four verticals that overload one safety, so user the near safety toward the numbers advantage as soon as you diagnose the route distribution. Look for running back releases out of the backfield on angle or wheel routes, since linebackers in man coverage can get isolated in space against faster backs.

Use this call on early to intermediate down and distance situations where you expect man beaters like slants and drags since your underneath defenders have safety help on deep routes.
Check pre-snap for two deep safeties split wide before the snap to confirm the shell, then user up one of the deep safeties to jump any route that breaks toward the middle of the field.
Hot route your corners into more aggressive press alignments if you anticipate a quick game passing attack, since the safety help lets you play tighter without fear of getting beat deep.
Pair this call with Tampa 2 and Cover 2 Hard Flat in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on your safety depth or underneath leverage from series to series.
Avoid calling this against heavy four verticals or seam concepts unless you user the deep safety toward the seam threat, since the two deep defenders can be stressed by simultaneous vertical routes on both sides.
