Overview
Base 4-3 puts four down linemen (two DEs, two DTs) with three linebackers (LOLB, MLB, ROLB) and four defensive backs (two CBs, one FS, one SS) on the field, making it the standard answer to 21 and 12 offensive personnel. It gives you two-gap run integrity without sacrificing a fourth pass rusher, so you can play Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells without needing an extra defender in the box. Offenses that spread you out with 11 or empty personnel will try to isolate your ROLB or MLB in man coverage against a slot receiver or a receiving back, which forces you to either sub in a nickel package or manually adjust with press, shade, and coverage audibles pre-snap.
Strengths
- Four-man front generates natural pressure so you can rush four and keep seven in coverage, which is the safest way to defend both levels without exposing a blitz-side gap.
- Three linebackers give you elite run fit versatility, letting you scrape over the top on stretch and outside zone while keeping your MLB clean in the hook zone against play-action.
- All 4-3 shells (Over, Under, Odd, Bear) share the same personnel, so you can flip between 46 Bear pressure looks and 4-3 Over base coverages without a substitution tell.
- Sam and Will linebackers work as user-controlled defenders in the middle of the field, giving you the range to jump crossers, drive on flat routes, and eliminate the seam without giving up C gap discipline.
- Strong against heavy sets: two DTs occupying interior blockers means guards and centers cannot climb to your MLB, which makes inside zone and duo runs stall at the line.
Weaknesses
- Linebackers in man coverage are the primary target, and a fast slot or a receiving back running an option route or angle route will win consistently against a ROLB or MLB with sub 85 man coverage.
- Only four defensive backs means trips and bunch formations force a linebacker to walk out wide, creating an obvious pre-snap read that opponents will attack with quick outs, slants, and dagger concepts.
- Base 4-3 against 11 personnel gives up leverage on the field side, and if you do not manually shade underneath and press, mesh and drive combos will find the vacated middle hook.
- Against four verticals or empty backfields you lack a fifth defender to match the seams, so Cover 3 shells get carved up by the two outside seam runners.
- Opponents recognize base personnel as a run-first tendency, which invites RPO and play-action shots downhill on your linebackers before they can gain depth.
