Overview
Base 4-3 puts four down linemen (two defensive ends, two defensive tackles), three linebackers (MLB, LOLB, ROLB), two cornerbacks, and two safeties on the field, giving you a balanced, run-first defensive identity that can still rush four and drop seven. It matches up best against 21, 12, and 22 personnel, keeping gap integrity against heavy sets and giving you a linebacker to spy or wall off tight ends and backs. Its formations run from 4-3 Over, Under, Odd, Walk, and Solid to 46 Bear and 2-5 Over Wide, so you can change your front, shift your box count, and disguise coverage without subbing personnel, which forces offenses to diagnose your look pre-snap instead of reading your personnel.
Strengths
- A four-man front with quality edge rushers generates pressure without blitzing, so you can drop seven into Cover 3, Cover 4, or Cover 2 Sink and still collapse the pocket.
- Three linebackers and two safeties give you elite gap control against 21, 12, and 22 personnel, and shifting to 46 Bear or Bear Under stacks the box to shut down inside zone, power, and counter.
- One personnel package unlocks ten formations, letting you toggle between Over, Under, Odd, Wide, and Bear fronts to disguise blitz angles and punish offenses that audible based on your personnel alone.
- A user-controlled MLB can rob hook zones, spy mobile quarterbacks, or trigger downhill on RPO give reads, making the middle of the field a hazard for slants and drags.

Weaknesses
- Only two cornerbacks means 11 personnel with a slot receiver forces a linebacker or safety to cover the slot, creating speed mismatches on crossers, mesh, and option routes.
- Offenses running hurry-up with 10 or 11 personnel can trap you in base before you sub into nickel, leaving linebackers stranded in space against spread concepts.
- Linebackers in man coverage struggle against RB wheels, angle routes, and TE seams, so opponents who spam those man beaters can exploit Cover 1 and Cover 0 calls.
- 46 Bear and other loaded boxes leave a single-high safety isolated, making four verticals, post-wheel, and double moves dangerous if your corners lack speed.
- Smart opponents key on base personnel as a run tell and punish it with play-action rollouts, flood concepts, and boot passes that stress linebackers flowing to the run fake.
