This call is built to shut down quick game and RPO tempo throws to the flat and boundary, so the primary read progression starts with the underneath flat defenders jumping any out, flat, or shallow crossers before working back to the deep half safeties on double moves or corner routes.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back and slot receiver releases first since this coverage is designed to erase quick outs, flats, and bubble screens aimed at those areas. Key the tight end or number two receiver on any seam or corner route, since that is the gap between the hard flat defender and the deep half safety. If the offense runs four verticals or double moves off play action, the deep safeties must stay disciplined and not bite on the flat fake or you will get exposed over the top. This call struggles against a true Cover 2 beater like a deep out or corner route timed to arrive after the flat defender has committed underneath, so user control a safety if you see receivers stacking vertically outside the numbers. Pre snap, look for the offense stretching the field horizontally with three receivers to one side, which signals they are attacking the flat and this defense is well suited to jump that route.

Use this call on early downs when you expect quick game, bubble screens, or RPO flat throws that attack the numbers. Identify pre snap if the offense is running a stack or bunch look to the flat, since Hard Flat is designed to squeeze exactly those quick out and flat combos. Bait the quarterback by showing a two high shell and disguising the flat defender depth, then jump the route right at the snap for a user pick six opportunity. Hot route the underneath linebackers into a hard flat or curl to tighten the middle if you are worried about drag routes settling in the void behind the flat defenders. Pair this play with Cover 2 Sink or Cover 2 Invert in your play calling sequence so offenses cannot key the flat defender depth from formation alone. Save this for third and short or second and short situations where you expect a quick, safe throw rather than a vertical shot.
