Nickel 2 Trap is a zone coverage shell out of the Dime 2-3-6 set that plays a Cover 2 look on top with trap coverage underneath on the receiving side. Both deep safeties rotate to the outside numbers to take away the go routes, while the trap defender on the right side sits on the flat and the corner underneath jumps any quick out or hitch, squeezing the sideline route. Four defenders drop into short zone drops across the middle and boundary, so the primary read is squat and settle: the trap defender first, then the deep half safety over the top, funneling anything intermediate into the linebacker zone drops underneath.

Defensive Reads

Watch the receiver alignment to the trap side pre snap, if a receiver is stacked short or in the slot expect an out or flat route that this trap defender is designed to undercut. Post snap, key the quarterback eyes to the boundary, if he looks quickly to the trap side he is likely trying to hit a hitch or curl that the trap defender will jump. This shell is vulnerable to deep double moves and corner routes since the trap defender bites hard on short stuff, leaving a window behind him if the receiver breaks vertical. Check the deep safeties rotation, if both are shaded to the trap side the offense can attack the opposite numbers deep with a go route since help is thinned out. Beware trips and bunch formations that overload the trap side, since the trap defender and shallow zone droppers can get picked or rubbed off natural traffic.

Usage Tips

Use this against offenses that lean on quick game and flat routes since the trap defender is sitting specifically to jump those throws before they develop.

Call this on early downs when you expect a boundary out, hitch, or flat concept and want to bait the quarterback into a pick six read.

Pre snap, identify if the offense is stacking or bunching to the trap side, since that formation is designed to be squeezed by the corner and trap defender combo.

Hot route the underlying zone linebackers into deeper drops if you are facing four verticals or seam shots, since the base drops here are shallow and vulnerable to seam splits.

Pair this with Cover 2 Invert or Cover 2 Sink in the same set to disguise which side is getting the trap treatment and keep quarterbacks guessing pre snap.
