Watch for a running back leaking out of the backfield on a wheel route, since this play’s four-man rush and lack of a spy can be exposed by an uncovered check release if the linebacker is late diagnosing it. Post-snap, read the underneath rushers for contain versus mobile quarterbacks, because Double Bracket does not bring extra pressure and can be picked apart with play action rollouts if the front four fail to generate a pass rush. This coverage shuts down slot fades and double moves but is vulnerable to trips formations that overload one bracket side with three receivers against only two defenders.
Usage Tips
Call Double Bracket on early downs when you expect play action or a deep shot concept, since the bracket technique on both sides eliminates go routes and posts against man beaters. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or dual slants, and if so this play is ideal because it doubles the top receivers to each side. Use the user-controlled defender on a slot receiver running a shallow drag to squeeze the mesh point and bait the quarterback into a shovel throw or checkdown. Pair Double Bracket with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 Robber Show 2 in the same set to disguise whether you are bringing extra pressure or dropping into a bracket shell, keeping the offense guessing between man and zone match concepts. Best used on third and long or in two minute situations where the offense is forced into a dropback passing concept with multiple verticals.
