Breakdown

Overload 3 Press is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the Dime Big 4-1-6 personnel that brings a four man overload rush from one side while dropping the remaining defenders into a three deep, three under shell. The two outside corners press at the line and sink into deep thirds, the deep safety in the middle bails to the third deep zone, and the underneath defenders (including the yellow shallow zone dropper) rob the short middle. Blocking assignment is irrelevant here since this is a defensive play, and the primary read progression for the defense is to time the overload rush to collapse the pocket while the zone defenders react to the quarterback's eyes underneath, forcing a quick throw into a leveraged flat or hook zone.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the running back alignment and offensive line splits to confirm the protection is not sliding toward your overload side, since a heavy slide can neutralize your extra rusher. Watch the slot receiver or tight end depth before the snap, since teams that align them into quick option or flare routes are setting up to attack the underneath zone vacated by your blitzers. Post-snap, key the quarterback's first step, if he hitches quickly he is likely throwing a hot route into the shallow zone that this play is designed to rob with the underneath defenders. This play beats teams relying on five man protection with quick game or three step drops, but it can be exposed by six man protection with a max protect check or by a quick screen to the backside away from the overload. Look for the deep safety and both press corners to maintain their deep third integrity, if a receiver runs a vertical seam or deep out against the overload side corner, trust the zone leverage rather than jumping the route early.

Usage Tips

Call this on early down and third and medium situations where you expect the offense to shift protection toward one side, since the overload rush exploits any hesitation in max protect or slide protection schemes.

Identify pre-snap whether the offense is in a shotgun spread look with quick game concepts, since the overload rush is designed to beat five man protections that cannot account for the extra rusher.

User the overload side outside linebacker or defensive back to time your blitz trigger just after the snap so you do not jump offside, then spy the running back if he stays in to chip block.

Mix this in with Cover 3 Match or Cover 3 Buzz Match from the same set to disguise whether you are bringing the overload pressure or dropping into a traditional zone shell, keeping the quarterback guessing pre-snap.

Avoid calling this on obvious passing downs against teams that run heavy hot route sight adjustments to the slot, since a quick out or stick concept can beat the underneath zone before the rush arrives.
