Defensive Reads
Watch the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are sitting deep at ten to twelve yards you are likely already in a quarters shell and can bait the quarterback into a checkdown. Key the number two receiver's release, a vertical stem from number two should trigger the slot defender to stay on top and eliminate the seam throw before it develops. This shell is vulnerable to hard play-action rollouts and RPO run reads because the underneath defenders are reading routes and can be slow to fill run lanes, so user the middle linebacker downhill on any run action. Cover 4 Quarters shuts down four verticals and deep post routes but can be exploited by quick game concepts like slants and shallow crossers if the underneath defenders are too passive at the snap. Post-snap, look for the quarterback staring down one deep quarter, since that usually signals a switch or smash concept trying to isolate a single deep defender in man coverage rules.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and long when you expect the offense to test the deep middle with four verticals or a post wheel combo.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense has bunched or stacked receivers to the same side, since that can create natural picks against your slot defenders in man match rules.
User the middle linebacker to rob any deep crosser or dig route that tries to split your two deep safeties, since that throw is the biggest weakness of a two high quarters shell.
Mix this call with Cover 4 Palms and Cover 6 Show 2 from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the safety rotation pre-snap and are forced to hold the ball an extra beat.
