Breakdown

Cover 1 Hole is a man coverage defensive play out of the Dime Big Dime 4-1-6 personnel group in the 2-3-6 set. The diagram shows a single deep safety rotated to the middle of the field as the deep hole defender (the "hole" player) while the second underneath defender sits in a shallow hook/curl zone with man leverage tendencies, and four defenders drop into short underneath zones or press man alignment at the line. This is a pure man beater killer, designed to lock up receivers with a robber/hole safety underneath to rob in-breaking routes and crossers while a true deep safety provides top-down help.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth: if the deep safety is shaded to a hash rather than dead center, expect the quarterback to attack the opposite half with a go route or deep out. Watch the running back and tight end release patterns, since the hole defender keys these first for potential check downs or drag routes. This coverage is vulnerable to double moves and comeback routes against off man corners, so user the corner on the offense's number one target if you suspect a double move. Against bunch or stack formations, look for natural picks that can spring receivers open against the underneath man defenders. Post-snap, if the quarterback stares down the middle of the field, trust the hole defender to break on the throw since he is sitting in the robber zone specifically for that read.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running mesh, drag, or crossing concepts since the hole defender is sitting specifically to jump those throws.

Use this call on third and medium to long when you expect man beater route combos like slants and digs from the offense.

Combine Cover 1 Hole with Cover 1 Robber Show 2 in your play-calling sequence to disguise whether the underneath defender is robbing shallow or spying the middle of the field.

Hot route your slot corners into press coverage against smaller slot receivers to reroute release timing and buy the pass rush extra time.

Pair this play with Cover 1 LB Blitz on the following snap to keep the offense guessing between a true hole player drop and a blitzing off ball linebacker.
