Breakdown

Cover 6 Show 2 is a Dime 2-3-6 Big Dime zone coverage call that shows a two-high safety shell pre-snap before rotating into a quarter-quarter-half shell post-snap. On the diagram the two outside cornerbacks carry deep thirds/quarters on the perimeter while the boundary corner squats on the flat with a short curl-flat drop, and the field side collapses into a curl-flat, hook, and deep half combination underneath the two-deep look. Underneath, the three zone defenders (hook, curl-flat, and deep half safety) create a tight bracket over any crossing or in-breaking route, making this a strong zone beater deterrent against smash and flood concepts to the field.

Defensive Reads

Watch the field side safety at the snap: rotation to a deep half signals the quarter-quarter-half shell is live, which shuts down deep out and corner routes to that side. The boundary corner squatting in the flat is a strong deterrent against quick hitches, bubble screens, and flat routes on that side, so route combos that stress the flat first will die immediately. This shell is vulnerable to skinny posts and seam routes attacking the middle hook defender if the linebacker gets caught peeking into the backfield on run action. Man beater route combos like drag and slant/flat concepts to the field side can stress the curl-flat and hook zone if the offense creates horizontal picks, since those are zone defenders without help over the top. Look for lurk threats from the underneath hook defender on any crossing route; if he sits too flat-footed he opens a window over the middle for a shallow crosser or drag route.

Usage Tips

Show this play on passing downs where the offense expects Cover 2 to bait quick-game throws into the flat, since the post-snap rotation to a quarter-quarter-half shell disguises the real coverage.

Pre-snap, key the safeties: if they stay at depth without rotating, expect the two-high shell to hold and use the boundary corner squat to jump underneath throws.

Use this on third and medium to long when you want a zone call that still shows two-high to freeze the quarterback's presnap read before the ball is snapped.

Pair this with Cover 2 Invert or Cover 2 Sink in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key rotation tendencies from the safety alignment alone.

Mix in Cover 6 Willie or Cover 6 Invert on back to back snaps to keep the shell disguise fresh and prevent offenses from diagnosing the rotation direction.
