Buck Slant 3 is a Cover 3 zone coverage call out of the Dime 2-3-6 set that uses a Line Slant front to slant the defensive line while dropping into a three deep, four under zone shell behind it. This is a zone beater's nightmare from the offense's perspective, since it combines gap-shooting linemen with sound deep thirds and underneath robbers to squeeze both the run and short passing game. The primary read progression for the defense starts with the deep third safeties confirming no vertical shots got behind them, then works down to the underneath zone defenders squeezing any in-cuts, slants, or flat routes before the ball is released.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are deep and the corners are off, you are likely staring at a standard three deep shell that Buck Slant 3 reinforces well. Watch the slot corners and nickel defenders at the snap, their initial jump toward the line of scrimmage tells you whether the line slant is shooting the play side gap. Key the quarterback's eyes against man beater route combos like slants and drags, since the underneath zone defenders need to sink and wall off crossing routes before they clear the hash. This shell can get exposed by well timed flood concepts or high low reads into the flat if your underneath defenders drift too far inside, so stay disciplined on zone drop depth. Man beater rub routes and pick concepts struggle against this since it is zone based, but be alert for RPO run reads that attack the slanting line gaps if your linebackers overcommit to the pass drop.
Call this on early downs or short yardage passing situations where you expect quick game concepts like slants, flats, or stick routes.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a bunch or stack alignment, since the line slant can be exploited by quick screens if your underneath defenders bite too hard.
Use the flat zone defender's user control to jump underneath slants and hitches, then trust your deep thirds to rally on anything that breaks vertical.
Mix this with Cover 3 Match or Cover 3 Buzz Match on the next snap so quarterbacks cannot key the underneath rotation from the pre-snap look.
Pair with FS Will Blitz 0 or Edge Blitz 3 in the same drive to disguise whether you are bringing extra rush or sitting back in the slant coverage shell.
