Breakdown

SS Overload 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the Dime 2-3-6 set that sends the strong safety off the edge to overload the protection while dropping the underneath defenders into a Cover 3 shell behind it. The defense rotates a deep third to each side with a curl-flat robber underneath, so the primary read is the offensive line identifying the overload side first and getting the running back or tight end to chip or pick up the extra rusher before the quarterback works his hot route. This is a pressure package designed to disguise a five or six man rush while still playing zone coverage behind it, making it a strong tool against both man and zone beating route concepts if the protection holds up.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back and tight end alignment pre snap, if both are set away from the overload the quarterback has minimal help picking up the extra rusher. Post snap, key on whether the offensive line slides protection toward your overload side, if they do not adjust you should get quick pressure and can bait a hurried throw. This beats quick game man beater concepts and shallow crossers because the underneath zone defenders squeeze passing lanes while the rush disrupts timing. Be wary of hot routes and screens to the overload side since the offense can attack the vacated area if your user controlled defender bites too hard on the rush. Deep comebacks and out breaking routes to the single covered deep third can be a weakness, so keep an eye on the numbers advantage the offense creates to that side of the field.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when offenses are more likely to run standard drop back protection that cannot account for the extra overload rusher.

Check the offensive formation and running back alignment pre snap, if the back is set away from your overload side you get a cleaner unblocked lane to the quarterback.

Disguise the blitz by showing a two high shell before the snap and rotating the strong safety down at or just after the snap to keep the quarterback guessing on coverage.

User the strong safety on the overload rep so you can control the rush lane and react if the quarterback tries to slide protection or throw a quick screen to that side.

Pair this with Overload 3 Press or Sim Pressure 3 in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on the same pre snap look and get comfortable diagnosing the overload side.
