Breakdown

Dbl Safety Blitz is a five-man pressure look out of the Dime 2-3-6 Big Dime 4-1-6 personnel. The diagram shows both safeties crashing downhill off the second level, with one blitzer coming off the edge and the other looping through the middle alongside a shooting linebacker, while the rest of the defense holds a shell behind the rush. This is a blitz package built to collapse the pocket fast and force a quick, inaccurate throw rather than a coverage-driven zone or man beater.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since both safeties are tipping their hand by walking down close to the box before the snap. Watch the running back and tight end release for check-release protection assignments, since a blocking back can pick up one of the blitzing safeties and negate the pressure. Post-snap, track whether the quarterback identifies the interior rush and steps up into a climbing pocket, which is the main counter to this blitz. This look is most effective against man protection schemes and slower-developing play-action, but it gets exposed by quick game and hot route throws to the flat that beat the blitz before it arrives. Man beater concepts with a slot receiver working across the vacated middle can punish this if the double safety blitz leaves a lurk defender out of position.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and medium against offenses that hold protection with six or fewer blockers, since the double safety pressure will overload the box.

Bring this after showing a soft shell coverage look like Cover 2 Invert or Cover 4 Quarters so the quarterback does not get a pre-snap read on the safety rotation.

User one of the crashing safeties yourself to control the exact gap or rush lane and disguise which side the pressure is coming from.

Pair this call with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 3 Buzz Mable in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key blitz versus coverage based on formation alone.

Avoid calling this on obvious passing downs against empty formations since the extra rushers leave fewer defenders to match slot receivers in space.
