This is a pure zone beater killer, not a blitz or man concept, so the read progression for an offense attacking it starts by identifying the buzz defender's flat drop, then working the seam or curl window behind him before checking down to the underneath crossers.
Defensive Reads
Watch the quarterback's eyes to the flat immediately after the snap, since the buzz defender is designed to rob quick out and flat routes before they develop. This shell is vulnerable to deep out routes and corner routes thrown to the boundary side away from the buzz rotation, so key the receiver alignment to the field versus boundary pre-snap. If the offense trips receivers to one side, the underneath zone can get stretched horizontally, so user the middle hook defender to stay disciplined and not overcommit to the first crosser. Look for play-action rollouts and bootlegs attacking the buzz defender's vacated zone, since he is triggering downhill and can be susceptible to misdirection. Post-snap, track the deep middle safety's depth, if he bites on double moves or play-action fakes it opens up the deep middle seam behind the buzz flat rotation.
Usage Tips
Call this out of Dime 2-3-6 on passing downs when you expect 11 or 12 personnel spread sets trying to attack seams, since the buzz rotation takes away quick flat throws and RPO bubble reads.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is aligned trips or bunch to one side and use your pre-snap adjustment to shift the buzz defender or spin the deep middle safety toward the strength.
Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you expect intermediate crossers or flat routes, since the underneath zone drops squeeze those throws.
