Overview
The NFL Live Cowboys Defense playbook is functionally identical to its sibling cut, Cowboys Defense. The two share all 374 plays and differ by zero sets, so there is no strategic reason to agonize over the choice: pick whichever appears in your playbook list and you have the same formation tree, the same personnel packages and the same concept pool. The only thing you are really selecting is the NFL Live label on the sheet.
What you get is a large defensive book (374 plays across 9 formations and 25 sets, bigger than 67 percent of the game's 64 defensive team playbooks) that is unapologetically a sub-package sheet. Nickel accounts for 181 plays across 10 sets, just under half the playbook, and when you stack Dime (57 plays, 2 sets), 3-3-5 (21 plays), 2-5 (15 plays) and Dollar (12 plays) on top of it, roughly three quarters of this book is five or more defensive backs on the field. The 3-4 is the base front at 63 plays across 5 sets, while 4-3 is a 6 play afterthought and Goal Line Defense is a 13 play, 3 set package you dip into only inside the five.
The concept list tells you how it wants to play: Cover 1, Man Coverage, Double Wr1 and Double Wr2 for bracket work against a single primary target, then Cover 3, Cover 3 Match, Cover 4 and Quarters when you need to sit on verticals, with Blitz, LB Blitz and Corner Blitz for pressure out of light personnel. Calls like Cover 1 Robber Press, Cover 1 Hole, Cov 1 QB Contain Spy and Corner Blitz 2 are the spine of the game plan. The 2-5 set is a genuine rarity, appearing in only 12 of the game's 236 playbooks, which gives you a two-down-lineman look most opponents have never had to read. This is a defense built to live in spread personnel, disguise man behind press alignment and blitz from the nickel and corner spots rather than win with a four man front.
Scheme Fit
This playbook wants a secondary first roster: two press capable outside corners with high man coverage and press ratings, a nickel defender who can cover the slot and rush off the edge, and at least one safety with the play recognition to play the robber and hole assignments without giving up the seam. Because 3-4 is your only real base front, you need edge rushers who can win one on one without stunt help and an interior lineman with block shedding to hold up when five defensive backs are on the field. Pick the NFL Live Cowboys Defense playbook if you are a user-heavy defensive player who likes living in sub packages, disguising Cover 1 behind press, and manufacturing pressure with corner and linebacker blitzes instead of relying on a four man rush.

Strengths
- Nickel at 181 plays across 10 sets means you can call an entire game from one personnel group, so your defensive line and secondary never sub off and your opponent cannot read your coverage from personnel changes alone.
- Ten Nickel sets plus two Dime sets give you enough within-formation variety to build a full audible package that flips from Cover 1 Robber Press to 3 Deep Blitz to Corner Blitz 2 without a formation change, letting you shift the line and show blitz late while keeping every call live.
- The 2-5 set shows up in only 12 of the game's 236 playbooks, so 1 Double Slot and the looks around it force opponents to identify rushers on the fly instead of falling back on a memorized read of a common front.
- Double Wr1 and Double Wr2 concepts out of the heavy defensive back formations let you bracket a single elite target with real personnel behind it, which a book weighted toward four man fronts has to fake with manual hot routes and user coverage.
- With 63 plays across 5 sets of 3-4 and Big Nickel 5-1-5 and Base 5-2 personnel available, you still have an odd front option to switch to when an opponent commits to inside runs, rather than being a pure spread-only sheet.
Weaknesses
- 4-3 is only 6 plays in a single set, so if you need a true base four man front against heavy personnel you are effectively forced into 3-4 or into playing Nickel undersized, and opponents who diagnose that will pound inside zone and lead runs.
- Nickel and Dime combining for 238 of 374 plays makes your run fits predictable; a patient opponent who never leaves 21 or 22 personnel puts your fifth and sixth defensive backs in the box on every snap.
- Cover 1, Man Coverage, Cover 1 Robber Press and Cover 1 Hole carry a lot of the coverage load, and man heavy books bleed to drag and mesh route combos unless you are consistently usering the hole or robber defender well.
- Goal Line Defense is only 13 plays across 3 sets and Prevent is 6 plays, so your short yardage and end of half packages are thin and your tendencies inside the five become easy to chart across a series.
- The corner and LB pressure concepts pull defenders out of coverage from light personnel, meaning a busted blitz out of 2-5 or Dollar leaves very little between the throw and the end zone.
Usage Tips
Build your primary audible package entirely inside Nickel and pick three or four of the ten sets so you can flip between Cover 1 Robber Press, a Cover 3 Match shell and 3 Deep Blitz on any down from first and ten through third and seven.
Save the 2-5 set and 1 Double Slot for third and long and obvious passing situations where the unfamiliar front buys you a pre-snap protection mistake, and do not show it early enough in a game for an opponent to log it.
Reach for 3-4 (5 sets, 63 plays) on first and second down when the offense goes heavy, and use the Base 5-2 and Big Nickel 5-1-5 personnel to keep an extra body at the point of attack instead of trying to stop power runs from Nickel.
Use Dime and Dollar with the Dime 3-2-6 and Big Quarter 3-1-7 groups on third and fifteen plus and in two minute situations, pairing Cover 4, Quarters and Cov 1 QB Contain Spy against scrambling quarterbacks rather than leaning on Prevent, which is only 6 plays.
Mix Corner Blitz 2 and LB Blitz calls into your Nickel rotation at a low rate so your man coverage looks and your pressure looks come from the same alignment, and always user the hole or robber defender on Cover 1 Hole to take away crossers.
