The primary read progression starts with the QB reading the backside DE at the mesh point: if he crashes down on the HB, the QB pulls and follows the FB lead through the vacated edge, and if the DE stays wide to contain the QB, the QB hands off to the HB into the interior gap.

Stacked boxes with 8 or more defenders and an extra linebacker signal run blitz packages designed to attack the mesh point before the QB can make his read. Zone read scrape exchange calls, where the DE stays home and a linebacker scrapes over the top to spy the QB, take away the keep option and force the give to the HB into a loaded box. Man coverage on the perimeter with safeties creeping down into the box confirms the defense expects run, so be ready for the fullback lead block to get contacted by an extra defender at the second level. User-controlled defenders flashing down at the mesh point before the snap animation completes usually indicate a jump on the run fit, so trust the fullback to seal that defender if the QB pulls.

Usage Tips

Check the backside defensive end alignment pre-snap since a wide 9-technique or a crashing edge rusher tells you almost immediately how the mesh read will play out.

Use this play on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of dime packages built to stop the pass.

Pair this with HB Power and HB Zone from the same Pistol Strong set so the defense has to respect both the gap scheme run and the zone read look, making the backside DE hesitate longer.

Motion the fullback or adjust the TE block angle if you see the defense stacking the box with an extra linebacker, since that alignment usually signals a run blitz aimed at the mesh point.

If the CPU or opponent consistently crashes hard on the HB, stick with the QB keep read and let the fullback lead block clean up the alley defender for an explosive gain.
