HB Power O out of Pistol Strong is a gap scheme run play built to pull a blocker across the formation and get a lead blocker through the hole for the HB. The diagram shows the offensive line down blocking with the backside guard pulling to lead through the point of attack, while the TE and FB (aligned in the backfield) seal the edge, creating a natural running lane between the tackle and TE. The HB takes the handoff from Pistol and reads the pulling guard, with the primary read progression being to press the hole, locate the puller, and cut off his block for the alley created by the down blocks.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check safety depth, since a single high safety with 7 in the box signals run support and makes this a tougher matchup. Watch the play side linebacker depth, as linebackers sitting shallow can shoot the gap before the pulling guard arrives and blow up the play. Post-snap, key the pulling guard's path, since if the defense flows hard and gets a defender into the hole untouched, the HB needs to cut back immediately. This beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that are light in the box and Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells that keep both safeties deep pre-snap. This struggles against Cover 0 blitzes and stacked eight-man fronts, since the extra unblocked defender can meet the puller before he reaches the point of attack.
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your pass sets.
Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has 6 or fewer in the box, Power O has a numbers advantage and should hit hard downhill.
User the pulling guard manually if you are comfortable, since aggressive AI blocking can whiff on linebackers filling fast, and a manual kick out block wins against stacked fronts.
Pair this with HB Off Tackle and HB Counter from the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run direction, since all three use similar backfield action but attack different gaps.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz looks with safeties creeping into the box, since the extra gap defender can beat the puller before he reaches the hole.
